History of PagSci
The Pagadian City Science High School was conceived and proposed by City School Division Superintendent Victorina G. Perez, CESO VI of the Pagadian City Division, who envisioned Pagadian City to be the knowledge center in Western Mindanao in coordination with the Department of Science and Technology. Patterned after Philippine Science High School, it was created to cater quality education enriched in science and mathematics to the gifted children of the city and its vicinity.
The proposal for the establishment of the establishment of the science high school was firstly sponsored by the first district congressman honourable Victor J. Yu. The necessary documents and feasibility study were submitted and endorsed to the congress of the Philippines.
By virtue of the authority vested upon by the Governance of Basic Education Act 2001, Government Authority was first granted to Pagadian City Science High School on September 1, 2010, by Bro. Armin A. Luistro, secretary of the Department of Education. Along with this, the compliance to maintain the required standards of DepEd pursuant to DepEd Order No. 1, s. 2003, and DepEd Order No. 71, s. 2003 was agreed.
On September 7, 2010, members of the 10th Sangguniang Panglungsod on joint and collective motion unanimously approved that the Honourable City Mayor be authorized to negotiate with the Department of Education, Region IX for the Establishment of a science high school in a City of Pagadian and appropriating of one million pesos for the purpose. The city government of Pagadian has also expressed its full and continuing support to its operation.
By School Year 2010-2011, the Pagadian City Science High School opened its doors was established for the 1st to 2nd Year High School Curriculum in accordance to the requirements in DECS Order No. 44, S.1995. The public institution coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology to cater an intensive and advanced secondary education program with special reference to science. In addition, the establishment was opened in response to the urgency of the division to establish a science high school that will continue the development of the intellectually advanced children that project SSES or Special Science in Elementary School has started.
The secondary school is located at the center point junction of Pagadian City in a rented building at DepEd Complex , San Jose Heights. It is surrounded by three elementary schools namely: Pagadian City Pilot School, Tomas Sagun Elementary School and San Jose Elementary School. It occupied the vacant four rooms in the Pagadian City Pilot School wherein one room was intended for the library and laboratory and the rest were used as classrooms.
For its first-year operation, it started with 100 freshmen enrolees divided into three classes namely: I-Carbon with 33 students; I-Hydrogen, 34 students; and I-Oxygen, 33 students. Teachers and other personnel were provided I the meantime that the newly-opened school did not have its own staff. The first batch of teachers who may be considered as borrowed teachers whose services were dispensed for the sake of its initial operation were: Mr. Dexter Jones Fiel, who handled Integrated Science I, Earth Science and was designated as the Laboratory in-charge; Mrs. Jusere Ann C. Basaya, English I and Developmental Reading; Mrs Janet S. Negoso, Elementary Algebra; Mrs. Shirley Sumugat, Filipino I, Mrs. Wrench G. Molde, Physical Education and Health and Values Education I; Mrs. Alna A. Lasala, Music and Arts; Mrs Mary Jane E. Cabatingan, Araling Palipunan I; Mr. Romy Baylen, Computer Science I; and Ms. Rosafe L. Rabutan, from the Division Office, detailed as clerk and designated as the school librarian. The school principal of Tomas Sagun Elementary School, Mrs. Mareitta R. Anhaw, full-pledged Master of Arts in Educational Management, was transferred to the newly-opened Pagadian City Science High School to be its first school principal.
It started with great ambitions, but a small budget. Science equipment and instructional materials (books, charts, audio-visual resources, tables, chairs, LCD’s) were given by DepEd Pagadian city division and the city government. But the school has no enough computer units for computer class so classes were held in Norberta Guillar National High School every Saturday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Despite the inconvenience and hardships, the search for excellence was clear to the staff.
The science and mathematics subjects are generally advanced. Each year staring in the second year, the students take Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects. Computer Science is offered in all year levels.
Social Studies and History class are required. Philippine History, Asian History, World History, and Life of Jose Rizal are taken up by freshmen, sophomore, juniors and seniors, respectively.
Four years of Filipino language and literature are required. Sining ng Pakikipagtalastasan courses are studied by freshman and sophomores. Junior tackles, pagbasa aty pagsulat sa ibat-iabng disiplina. Include in their panitikan are Ibong Adrarna, Florante at Laura, Noli Me Tangere, and El Filibusterismo, which are tackled during freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior, respectively.
